Having a car with a sunroof is a cool feature. It can come in handy to let a little air into the car while you’re driving for sure. But it can also be dangerous. Things can get in, but things can also get out, especially young children.
A Louisiana mom was recently arrested after she left her child in the car to go shopping. During her time in the store, the 1-year-old attempted to climb out of the sunroof. People saw what was happening and called police, likely saving the toddler’s life. Now, the mother is facing charges of child abandonment.

Police received several 911 calls.
“People walking and driving through the parking lot in the 3500 block of Williams Blvd on a sunny November day (Nov. 27) were shocked to see a small child trying to crawl through an open sunroof to escape a locked vehicle,” the Kenner Police Department shared in a statement on Facebook.
“Our 911 center received several calls, and our officers responded immediately.“
The child's mother was not near the car.
According to police, the child’s mother was shopping at a store in the shopping center nearby. There was no report as to how long the little one had been in the car alone. Thankfully, police were able to get the child out of the vehicle without causing any harm, and the child seemed to be fine.

The mom was arrested right away.
Azreil Rahman, who lives in Metairie, Louisiana, was immediately arrested after her child was found and was charged with child desertion, per the police department’s Facebook post. As authorities continue to investigate the crime, the toddler has been placed in the care of family members.
This story could have had an even worse ending.
The police department hasn’t shared any information as to why the mother left her toddler alone in the car, but it expressed gratitude for concerned people who called about the incident.
“Had he made it out of the car, through the sunroof, a fall from that height could prove fatal,” Police Chief Conley shared in the statement. “There are no words to express the shock and anger over this — this is a CRIME. I can’t stress that enough!”
