The first day of kindergarten can be a lot of things for kids and their moms. It's exciting, it's scary, it's exhausting, and you never quite know what to expect. As a mom, it doesn't matter if it's your first time sending off a kindergartner or your fifth: Each child will come home from the day with a different takeaway, and sometimes, it's totally unexpected.
In the case of Pennsylvania mom Ricki Weisberg, when she met her little one at the school bus after his very first day of kindergarten, she was ready to lavish him with all the words of encouragement and praise she could muster. But much to the entire internet's surprise, her son, Abe, only had one things on his mind: lunch.
Ricki was super-excited to see her little guy after school.
Abe's mom Ricki was waiting excitedly for him at the bus stop at the end of his first day of kindergarten, camera in hand. But she had no idea she'd be capturing a totally unexpected "Kids say the darndest things moment" that would end up going viral.
Abe had something very important to say to his mom.
Abe stepped off the bus with a smile on his face as his mom cheered him on, and after briefly stopping for an embrace, the very first thing he said to her was, "Mommy, terrible sandwich by the way. … really terrible."
Now we — and the rest of the internet — can literally not stop laughing. Between Abe's super-cute little voice and his complete honesty, we are totally smitten.
His mom handled the criticism so gracefully.
All kudos go to Ricki. We're not sure if she batted an eye or not, but it sure seemed like she didn't. Her response? Simply "Thanks for letting me know."
Seems like she's equally as straightforward as her son. We love that she respects Abe's opinion, and just from that short clip, we can tell she was prepared to take his feedback into consideration.
Ricki has been blown away by the response to the video.
Abe is actually in fourth grade now, and Ricki said she shares the video on social media at the start of each school year, and it's been viewed millions and millions of times.
"It’s insane," she told Today Parents. "The video has almost 10 million views on TikTok. I think Twitter is over 8 million. It’s crazy."
That face though ...

But like … Abe clearly felt a certain type of way about that sandwich. Just look at the face he gave her!
We're not at all surprised that this video has legs of its own. Abe is clearly an awesome kid, and we could all probably use a dose of his honesty in our lives. Good job raising such a cool kid, mama!
