An 8-year-old child has died from his injuries after a statue fell on him at a resort in Arizona. Just before Thanksgiving, a statue fell from its pedestal at the Arizona Biltmore Resort, a historic luxury resort in Phoenix.

When the statue fell, it crushed the young boy, who was then rushed to the hospital in “extremely critical condition,” Fox 10 reported.

The child died on Thanksgiving Day.

On November 27, 2024, Phoenix Fire Captain Todd Keller, praised the firefighters who helped get the child to the hospital “really quickly,” per Fox 10. Unfortunately, the boy did not survive his injuries. On December 2, the Phoenix Police Department told the news outlet that the boy died on November 28.

It's unclear why the statue fell.

The tragic incident is still under investigation. Police told Fox 10 that “there are no signs of foul play at this time” and “there will be no other updates to this case.”

However, investigators are still trying to determine what went wrong at the luxury resort. At this time, authorities do not know what caused the concrete statue to fall off its pedestal, nor do they know how it ended up falling on the young child.

The statue was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The statue that fell on the child was one of the 19 Solemn Sprite statues at the resort, per CNN. The statues are historically significant. According to the resort’s website, they were designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright in collaboration with artist Alfonso Ianelli, in 1914. In 1985, the Arizona Biltmore received the statues as a gift.

The child reportedly suffered a head injury.

The child’s name has not been released. According to KPNX, he suffered a head injury when the statue fell on him. Authorities don’t know what was happening at the scene of the incident before the statue fell, Capt. Keller told Fox 10.

The resort released a statement.

After the statue fell on the child, the resort released a statement. “Our top priority is the safety of our guests, and our thoughts are with the family impacted by today’s events,” the statement shared with KPNX read.

The Arizona Biltmore shared another statement with CNN after the child died. “We are deeply saddened to learn of the family’s loss and extend our heartfelt condolences. We wish them peace and respect their right to privacy during this difficult time,” the statement read. “Our commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for our guests is paramount and we continue to cooperate fully with all authorities investigating this incident.”
